China’s motorbikes in the fast lane.

Motorbikes sales in China may be slumping, but the new generation shows an appetite for luxury vehicles, writes Mark Andrews

It is easy to think of China as a kingdom of bicycles rapidly becoming one of cars, but the country is also the largest producer of, and market for, motorbikes. Despite this, all is not well and sales have fallen to the lowest level in five years – 2012 saw a more than twelve per cent decrease.

Much of this is due to people choosing cars or cheaper scooters over motorbikes, yet the market for motorbikes of more than 250cc, particularly large luxury bikes, is increasing. “The segment of 250cc and above increased by 15 per cent over 2011” says Sean Jiang, managing director of Harley Davidson’s China operations. “The market for imported luxury bikes above 650cc increased by 43 per cent in 2012” he adds.
